Nutrition after Surgery


After surgery, it is important to include protein and fibre in your diet to speed up the healing process. You can make smoothies with fruit or eat fruits such as bananas or canned fruit. Brown rice, oatmeal or other cooked grain foods can be part of your meal after your surgery.

Pay attention to your food selection

Here are some examples to follow:

  • Exclude hard or sticky foods from your diet for a few weeks. Example: carrots, apples, celery, candy, etc.
  • Eat cold food such as milk shakes, ice cream and sorbets if there is sensitivity.
  • Take drinks cold or at room temperature.
  • Cook your food until it is tender
  • Use a blender to puree your food.
  • Cut your food into small pieces.

Here are suggestions for meals and foods:

  • casseroles such as lasagna, tamales or fish
  • egg dishes such as scrambled eggs, poached eggs, quiche, egg salad
  • pureed vegetables like peas, carrots, potatoes and baby food

  • vegetable soup with tofu
  • pasta with a soft consistency
  • avocado, asparagus, peas, pureed carrots
  • Jell-O
  • canned pears
  • tuna or canned chicken
  • tender meat cooked in a slow cooker
  • hamburger or meat cut into small pieces
  • tofu
  • puree, soup and sauce mixes
  • softened cheese
  • ice cream
  • croustade
  • peanut butter
  • pancakes, French toast with maple syrup or fruit sauce
  • macaroni and cheese, Macaroni with cream of tomato
  • buttered noodles with Parmesan cheese
  • pasta or potato salad
  • guacamole, hummus, cottage cheese or cream cheese on a soft biscuit
  • chicken stew, chicken pot pie
  • chicken a la king, salmon in a creme sauce
  • baked beans
  • fish casserole
  • meatloaf
  • meatballs with or without pasta
  • well-cooked vegetables in a sauce or melted cheese
  • fruit salad, melon, avocado, banana
  • lentil soup, cream of broccoli or other
  • beef, pork, chicken, turkey cooked in a sauce
  • spaghetti squash
